And Oakland is of course one of the more economically challenged cities in the area. So exactly what does the rioting achieve? Can we let the process have a chance?

I added that to my description, and the most officer challenged too. I have never condoned that criminal behavior, rioting, so I have no idea what they are trying to achieve. They often hurt the businesses of their own race, which never makes sense to me. Of course the process should have a chance, but knowing what I know, I am very skeptical about the ultimate outcome.

Striking image. What is happening is very sad. Hopefully it will be resolved in a peaceful manner soon!

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Show me what you got, and we'd love to have this added to the group!
Hey people will protest anything, wouldn't be funny if those people went and got jobs instead of being unemployed and working people picking up the tab, that way maybe these law enforcement individuals wouldn't have to be paid to do this
|
Great shot.
And people need to calm down; rioting isn't going to solve the problem.

And Oakland didn't deserve this, they are bearing the brunt of it, and it's all over CNN and it looks like the stereotypical image of Oakland, dark and dangerous, when that is so not true. I love Oakland, it is a grand city, and I am sorry they are going through this because of what a BART officer did.

The picture above is a NY Times-quality shot.
One of the worst things is, if there weren't dozens of witnesses present at the scene where the shooting took place, and if videos of the incident didn't end up all over the web, the whole incident would have been hushed up and the poor victim would have been charged with "resisting arrest".
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I would love to see my photos on the front page of a newspaper. Considering, I was too afraid to be a journalist, so I became a cop! Now I am back to my roots, and hoping to make it in photojournalism one day.
As to your assessment of what may have happened, so true. so sadly true. i was in law enforcement for 12 years, I know what can happen.
glynffransisbenjaminrowlands yes, they are. being a cop is a very hard job. thankless and brutal on the body. cops are heros, accept when they kill.
so, i am tired of cops who kill getting off on "justifiable homicides", especially when they kill mentally ill people, which happens more than people know. cops are really not trained enough to deal with mentally ill people, so when one is going berserk, because they didn't take their meds., cops don't understand, and resort to deadly force to deal with the out of control, off their meds., mentally ill. a SJPD cop killed a woman in 3 seconds after going on scene. she was bipolar. she never had a chance. he was acquitted!! but, the civil law suit was the largest award ever handed down in the City of San Jose, +/- $20 million dollars!
my ex never made a stop without coming out of his car with his gun drawn. i found this most disturbing. was he that scared, or just that ready to kill? he killed a man in San Bruno before he was a SJ cop. The man was attempting suicide, and he just handed to him on a platter. suicide by cop. i rarely drew my gun, but on 3 specific occasions, i was confronted by a suspect using deadly force, i.e. a gun. i used my voice each and every time to calm them down and get them to drop their gun, and i succeeded each time. Command presence, and controlling the situation, that is what i was paid to do, not just off someone because they happened to point a gun at me. i was very proud that i could do that. i was not afraid to use deadly force, i just never felt that i was going to be shot, so i didn't shoot, and i trusted my ability to diffuse the situation, which I did.

I see it was a very tragic night in Oakland again. 3 officers killed and a 4th hurt. I really hope things get better out there. A rough couple months just got much worse. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those affected by this tragedy
I see the fourth officer just died.....unbelievably sad

I am just so blown away, I can't even think straight. I missed the Vigil due to illness, but I think also because I am just too much in shock, and shock left over from my own tragic days as a cop. I can't stomach it right now. I think I will have to grieve alone tomorrow. I just can't see myself in that Oracle Arena with tens of thousands of people, and having to face 4 coffins. It will just make me cry and I'm not sure if I can stop.

Here is a song I found on the internet, to honor the fallen Oakland PD officers and ALL the Heroes at OPD:
HEROES UNSUNG
Words & Music by Steve Siler
Without a thought for yourselves
You race into the fires of hell
Unselfishly you sacrifice
and give your all to save a life
Anonymity's a pale reward
for all the things you've done
Heroes Unsung
You've seen the worst the world can give
You hold inside what you can't forget
The armor grows to block the pain
It's just so hard to communicate
And you never thought that you'd burn out
But sometimes you feel numb
Heroes Unsung
With uncommon acts of bravery
You rush into harm's way
Giving something to the rest of us
There is no way to repay
Have we taken you for granted
Without counting up the cost
'cause every time we lose even one of you
The best of us is lost
You're a human being with hopes and dreams
You've got a name and a family
If we never stopped to tell you thanks
That day has finally come
Heroes Unsung
You'll be honored for eternity
When all of heaven's stars are strung
Heroes Unsung
(Steve Siler)

excellent image, all your words so true Paula. Everyone so far has good thoughts. The song above rings true as well.
The situation simply is not good.

Many sensible comments above. Sadly a few trigger happy cops ruin the police's reputation for the vast majority of really decent officers. Worldwide US police have this cowboy reputation for shooting at the least excuse. These demonstrations are however unjustified and the judicial system must be the judge, not mob rule.

Todd you sir are a fool. It is idiots like you that make life such a crap shot. If everybody had your negative attitude there would be a blood bath. I am reading your dribble just after viewing the memorial for the 4 officers in Seattle how can you possibly condone people being murdered just because of their chosen profession what would you say to their families. what do you do for a living if indeed you actually work. Could it be that your rotten attitude is a direct result of your being a failure. Do yourself and everyone else a favour do not reproduce we do not need more idiots running around

cmcharlesmillar Not only is he most likely a failure in life, but a total LOSER. He probably had no parents who loved him, no one to raise him right either. But, that is something you deal with as you get older, go to counseling, etc. He's one sick puppy, for sure. I don't know how I missed that comment, but I do not condone that type of language on my page. Actually, I thought I did comment on it, maybe he deleted it?
However I may feel about the incident, I have to keep my feelings neutral; because I am a photojournalist. I am also a former cop, note former, and I do not much like cops, I have worked inside, I know what goes on. It's an unhealthy atmosphere. I put up w/ it for 10 years, then got out. Best thing I ever did. Both ways. I loved my job, but so glad I got out too. I love being a photojournalist more. I pray for all cops. May God help them not to be corrupt or evil, they are not above the law, they are simply human beings who wear a uniform. They need to get down off their pedestals and just be good people when they do their job and maybe more people would like them better and have more compassion when they die. As for what I went through at my department, I find that I have true strength and integrity to still be able to speak with compassion and dignity when I talk about cops. I could be pretty awful. I have a lot of bad I could say, a lot of stuff I could reveal, but it's not the time or place herein.
